Let's have some fun with the camera.
1. The tools
Besides your camera you will need a tripod and a flashlight with homemade snoot. (or any other kind of light you can handle and move). Why a tripod? Because you will choose a shutter speed slow enough to do your drawing. In my case, it usually takes me 20 to 30 seconds to create the scene.
I recommend using a remote control which gives the option to lock the shutter in bulb mode. Like that, you have all the time you need to be creative! I use the cheap ebay remote from Hong Kong with my Nikon camera and it works well.
2. Light
All kind of lights can be used. Don't worry about your sensor, it won't be damaged if you point the flashlight (laser etc) directly on it while you shoot.
I use a little light also used as a key chain. It s powerful enough to draw the characters and can be turned on/off just by pressing a button.
3. My Camera settings
Shutter speed: As long as you need to create the scene.
ISO: I usually put it on 100 so I can set the shutter speed on a very slow value and I don t get any noise on my photographs.
Aperture: Set it doing a test shot without drawings, focusing on an element close to what you are going to draw.
Flash: Can be used to fix a person or a moving element in the scene.
White balance: Set it doing a test shot.
Focus: Obviously on manual if there is not enough light.

status repair went from it'll be fixed within 7 business days (when it was received on 11/18) to 10 business days as of today. seriously? wtf?

with the events over the last five days, i'm surprised i haven't shot my foot off. this just kind of tops the cake.

oh wait.

i don't own a gun.

and i don't like cake.

*update 12/1*

so, it's in my hands. i don't think this is my camera.

first - big scratch on the top of the flash.
second - there's nothing that resembles raspberry truffle anywhere and the battery compartment opens without a problem

although, everything is still on my old settings and obviously the serial number is still the same...

BUT WHERE'S THE RASPBERRY TRUFFLE!??!!?

oh well.

at least i got another 6 months on my warranty to try and break it again.

i'm just happy to have it back finally. there was a really cool set-up with the moon and two planets today, but that was as i was getting in my car to go pick up the camera in lewiston (fedex signature requirement ftl) and it all went to shit after that.

another funny note...the service details:
We have examined the product according to your request, and, upon close inspection the exact cause could not be identifed but it was found that [big empty space] Electrical adjustments were carried out on the AF assembly. Other electrical adjustments and inspection and cleaning were carried out.

but again...

WHERE'S MY RASPBERRY TRUFFLE!?!?!?

Impulse Lens Purchases...

I'm rather impulsive with my spending habits. This impulsive spending led to the purchase of my first motorcycle at age 29, best impulse buy ever. I impulsive about the purchase of my DSLR too, buying a new Nikon D60 a few months back. I've since captured 1000's of images, mostly snap shots of family and friends, cars, bikes, flowers, etc. Maybe only a couple of dozen images that I really am proud of.

On impulse I bought a 50mm f/1.8 ( 2137 Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard Auto Focus Nikkor Lens - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty ) and have alot of fun with it. Now I want ( note want, not need) another lens. I don't know why, I don't use the lenses that I have now very well... I am absolutely obsessing about Nikon's 18mm-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR-II ( 2159 Nikon 18mm - 200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR-II Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor Lens with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty )for no better reason than replacing two lenses that I don't use well with one single lens. I've been able to talk myslef down... for now. Maybe I'll sell my d60 and lens kit and buy a D300 with the lens I want... Damn my impulsesiveness!

Nikon 13-300mm f/1.0 VR Lens for only $99!

My first lens was Nikon's versatile 18-200mm VR lens, and I loved it... until I started getting faster 2.8 lenses and now I never even pull out this...

My first lens was Nikon's versatile 18-200mm VR lens, and I loved it... until I started getting faster 2.8 lenses and now I never even pull out this lens.

So I put all my new lenses back in their cases and popped this 18-200 back onto my D300 to see how it fairs. It's not as fast, but it's very versatile with such a wide focal range.

Is it even worth hanging onto? I think for its versatility, I might as well. Ken Rockwell swears if he was stuck with just one lens, this would be the one because of its wide focal options. I prefer the sharper images that my faster lenses provide, and I feel I should use them since I did pay an exotic price for them.

So do I sell my 18-200 or hang onto it?

It's my only DX lens, and I wont invest any more money into DX technology so when I get my full frame (Nikon, if you're reading this, please release the Nikon D3X) camera, all my lenses can take advantage of the FX (full frame) sensors.

Is it worth hanging onto all your lenses? A good glass collection is awesome, but is better to grow your collection or to improve it overall by trading up to better lenses?

Now, if only they would release a Nikon 13-300mm f/1.0 VR Lens for only $99! :D

So far, so good!

Microsoft finally released Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Windows Vista. I have been an early adopter of Vista, and have found that managing my photos and photo software have ran better under XP than Vista.

So I downloaded the 400Mb service pack and watched an install that took over an hour on my laptop.

I dont notice anything new, regarding features or functionality, but I do notice an increase in speed all throughout the operating system. Managing large folder of photos and opening up the standard suite of Adobe software are happening with faster access times.

I'm only 12 hours into the service pack, but I've seen a lot of speed improvements all throughout Vista. I guess I'll keep using it, to see how it continues to fair.

How have your experiences been with Vista SP1?

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8

Just picked up a brand new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR Lens... usually I go with B+W for protective lens filters, but went with a Nikon filter instead......

Just picked up a brand new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR Lens... usually I go with B+W for protective lens filters, but went with a Nikon filter instead...

First impressions... external noise - I'm talking audible noise, not picture noise.

It has a solid construction, feels great on my D300, very manageable, classic Nikon feel...

With the internal lens movement, and compared to the quiet motors of my Nikon 28-70 2.8, this lens makes that additional "click" sound, especially when moving up between the focal lengths and focusing.

Now I'm scared Nikon is going to release this workhorse of a lens, revised with some better silent motor technology... but until they do, I'll be happy with what I have.

Forecast today and throughout the weekend is looking rainy and cold, so no trying out the lens just yet... next week hopefully!
