My Camera: Canon S5 and 50D

I need a 50D

Anyone want to help me find a good deal on one? Got the cash. Need the gear.

$1160 at 42ndStreet Photo
$1167 at Amazon.com
$1167 at BH
$1189 at BeachCamera
$1230 at Adorama
$1400 at Ritz

*sigh* I wish I hadn't missed that Canon rebate sale a couple weeks back. It would have only been $1050.

If I buy off a Canadian website that and pay in CAD, I'd get a screaming deal... Hmmm...

Ebay # 230323926156. The guy had great ratings - just a thought 1,036.10.

+1 Good people, and good prices.

They have a near perfect rating on ebay, and like 11231231232123 transactions.

I had forgotten about buying in Canada. I have Friday off - just maybe a trip is in my future! If I can find my birth certificate that is.

Jason my GF goes to Canada at least once a month (Just went last weekend...Doh). I'll see about having her look around up there if you want.

The dollar exchange is in our favor for the time being. The price in Canada may look the same as the price is the US but if you charge it to a credit card or debit card the banks will charge or debit your account in US funds. It changes daily:

Currency Calculator

You also have to pay GST but you can fill out a form and get that back. Sometimes your bank may also charge you a fee for the international conversion. It sounds like a scam but it works for me!

You might get hit with a customs charge when the package gets to the U.S.
Sometimes when I order out of country, I get hit with a tax from U.S. customs.
One other thought - make sure Canon USA will work on a "non" U.S.A. camera. Nikon will not work on anything that was not purchased in the U.S.

Did you buy one yet? If so, could I ask which vendor you chose? I'm looking at picking up a open-box 40d for good price or the 50D if I can get a great online deal. It'd be about a 400 price difference.

still waiting for that magical deal to come along... *sigh*

Canon has a big rebate right now, but I hate all that mail in crap. I'd rather just buy it at the lower price and be done with it.

What's the rebate? I haven't seen any except for like $200 off if you buy a printer or something. Can you just buy the body and get a rebate?

It looks like you gotta spend a lot more money just to save $200 bucks. A camera, lens and a flash. Such a deal.

you don't have to mail in the rebates. whatever store you buy it from does it for you automatically.

and go get it already. all this time you've been waiting to save a few bucks from the lowest deal you've already seen, you could've been taking some pictures with it.

No, but their stuff JUST went back on sale. I've been browsing prices for a couple days now.

Looks like the 430 EXII flash is $30 off and the 70-200 2.8 IS is $200 off.

but canon also recently increased prices due to the value of the dollar. BobAtkins.com - Digital Cameras - Lens Tests - Canon News and Rumors - Canon EOS FAQ and more...

so having waited for this rebate is kinda null.

That's from May 1st 2008. It's over a year old.

I had just purchased the XTi from you about a month before that.

I bought my 40D last year a little while before the 50D was announced. Kind of liked the 50D improvements, but held on to the 40D for almost a year now.

But after shooting about 500 shots at SBK last week, and my wife asking me to be the photog at her convention in a couple of weeks, I decided to try and make the move. I listed the 40D on craigslist today to see what would happen, and had it sold and picked up in under two hours.

I guess the point of this post is, after reading this thread earlier today, I thought I'd mention I just ordered the 50D body for $1018 at butterfly photo, which seems to be a decent price.

Post back when you get it.

If you got it for that price with no hassles and it works like it should, I'll slap it on a credit card so fast that it'll sizzle.

I paid for 3-Day shipping ($17.80), so tracking says it'll be here tomorrow. I'll let you know after I get my hands on it.

I had a good experience with butterflyphoto last year when I mistakenly ordered the 40D from them after I had already ordered one from another seller (buydig, where I buy a lot of stuff). I was able to call the next morning and cancel the order, no problem. They also have great feedback on resellerratings.com.

One of their guys did call me Tuesday to confirm Thursday delivery, and also tried to sell me a spare battery, and extended warranty or something, but wasn't too much pressure. He was polite. My debit card wasn't charged for the camera until after it shipped Tuesday.

EDIT TO ADD: Camera arrived at noon. Fresh camera with latest firmware from April '09. Works just as advertised!

EDIT AGAIN: oops, just noticed the price went up to $1089
