Grand Canyon

We were in Arizona and Utah for Thanksgiving week. It really was the vacation from hell, but the Grand Canyon was pretty great as was Bryce Canyon. Unfortunately in a one week driving trip you take the light you get, and most of my Bryce Canyon stuff is pretty much crud. I have a few tricks up my sleeve, but I haven't worked them yet.

I have done most of the Grand Canyon stuff, and to be honest, the best shots, it seems to me, are on the way up there and back. You just can't get the Grand Canyon in a shot, no matter HOW wide you go.

about an hour. Let me tell ya. Scared the crap out of me. It was windy and dark as hell. Lots of tree limbs and stuff falling all around the place. Sitting there by myself listening to the wind howl and falling crap, I kept thinking something was creaping up behind me.

Anyone around here have some tips on how to take sweet pics of my wifes new car? Something that emphasizes the shape of the vehicle maybe (and take the eye's off the cheap hubcaps)

Sunset

The sunset, as seen from ASU campus last night.
Hoping for some critiques/CC, this was my first stab at sunsets, and I like the photos but feel as though they are lacking...
i.e.
Is #1 too dark to work?
Do the birds lend to or detract from #2?
Am I right to think a circular polarizer would have helped?

1. ISO 640, 1/640, f/14

2. ISO 400, 1/200, f/14

3. ISO 200, 1/30, f/18

[The reason my horizon was so low (frame-wise) in the pics is b/c the tops of campus buildings distracted from the mountains, seen at the bottom of the last 2 pics..]

Yeah, its an xB. Didnt i see a pic of yours with an xB in your driveway? I figured you would recognize it.

Anyway, have any tips on lighting or locations for automotive shots? I would love to find a spot with lots of well-defined circles or squares in the background do emphasize the cars shape.

I do think they are too dark, and also not really much to draw me in. A CP would not really have helped, you were looking right into the sun, CPs only do much for reflections or the sky if the sun is to either side of you.

The thing I don't like about the photos is that they're mostly just sky and there isn't too much to draw me in. I think the birds in 2 lend to the photo, would more so if you were zoomed in a bit.

yea. i was just giving you a hard time. not a fan of the "xb2". lost it's uniqueness. but that's not important.

i know quite a few places in Olympia if you are interested in making the drive. other than that... can't go wrong with downtown seattle.

Dang it's cold... the river 50 feet before the 120 foot plunge of the Little Mashel Falls outside of Eatonville, Wa.

The base of the falls with large chunks that have fallen and then iced over as the water spills onto it...

i shot the memorial procession for the 4 fallen police officers the other day for the newspaper and was thankful to have come up with some pretty memorable photos for the families of their loved ones being honored. Here's just a few from the ~200 or so i got. really heart warming experience seeing over 2000 police/fire vehicles come out to show support.

all are edited very little with just a little contrast and sharpening.
