First attempt at Senior Portraits

As most of you know part of what I do for a living is A/R work in the music industry. That basically means working with up and coming bands for indie labels who want them to get ready for live performances/tours and studio work. I've been working with a pretty damn good band out of Cashmere (Eastern Washington) for the past few months and they wanted me to do a photo shoot for their press kit. One of the members liked the shots that I did and he and his mom asked if I'd like to do his Senior Portraits. I'm not charging anything and doing it just for practice. I had sooooo much fun doing the shoot. Here are some of the pics that both he and his mom liked. His mom said I captured the "real Travis" and Travis said that he was much more relaxed during my shoot than he was with the professional studio that he had gone to earlier.

This is the one that he chose to have in the school yearbook.

His mom really liked this one.

His mom's favorite shot.

Thank you. Yeah, I asked his mom if I should have someone fix it in Photoshop and she said no. She wanted it left that way. I would have had to find someone to do it anyway. I don't know how to.

I think the poses and composition is good but the post processing is lacking. I'm guessing those are pretty much straight from the camera?

Yep, directly from the camera. I haven't learned how to do the pp part of it yet.

i suggest carrying a gray card wherever you go, especially if you're not able to do pp. use that to correct your white balance for each scenario.

How have they changed? Mine from 1980 look almost exactly like the ones in #'s 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8. I went down to Barnes and Noble and looked at 5 different books (1994-2007) and they haven't changed in years.

They used to be just a bust, shoulders on up. We all made an appointment in the school gym - wow am I showing my age! We were not given an choice of who would take your picture. Now that I look back at it - I guess it looked more like a mug shot! There was no real personality to it what so ever. An entire book full of mug shots from Auburn Sr. High class of 19?? we seemed so cool back then!!

As per our conversation.....

I edited your first pic 13 different ways. I don't necessarily like all of them but just wanted to show how quick and easy you can edit stuff in LR. Some are minor 'corrections,' some are total style changes. Anyways....

I have a bunch of presets in LR, some I downloaded, some I made. Basically I just picked different presets, maybe made one or two adjustments and that's it.

WOW!! Some of those are awesome!! I'm going to have Teri (Travis's mom) look at these and see if she likes any of them.
